Weekend - 19th to 21st March

Hey Folks,

Well, having been on doctors orders to rest our bad back last weekend, we missed out again on some fabulous frolics, which included Eurotrash’s launch & Per Q.X’s birthday as well as Mr legend himself, Pagano, whom we are well informed created plenty of musical drama with a brilliant performance at Beyond. We also missed Patrick Lilley’s new club event, “Music Is The Answer” at Barcode (more on that later), so apologies to all.

But, doctors orders or not, we will be out & proud this weekend and with lots on offer, not least a pseudo Spanish invasion, we look at two events that have grabbed us and also then whizz through the best of the rest, as well as that Barcode mention of course.

First event to grab our attention is super Ibiza club brand Space, which returns to London as part of its world tour, although has found a new home over in King Cross at Laurence Malice’s Egg nightclub. The first of our Spanish invaders, Space, for its first foray onto the gAylist scene, rubs shoulders for the night with metroseuxual club brand “Blow”, one of many within the Malice empire, the most famous probably being “Breakfast” which carried on the tradition Laurence & his team left behind with weekly Trade’s at Turnmills, but pointed their desires in a slightly different direction. And there is no doubt that The Egg on York Way, the host venue for Space this time round, has that decadent feel that those of you that visited Turnmills in the heady days of the 90’s enjoyed, although with superb & sophisticated decor together with state of the art lighting & sound, it is definitely a smart & swish affair spread across three floors with a fabulous terrace & outside area, so the trip up to Kings Cross will be well worth it. Not least this Friday, as with Space locking horns with Blow, the D.J. line up is delightful and showcases a mixture of gAylist names & those more akin to the venues metrosexual stance, so with the likes of Clint Lee, Neil Barratt, Jon Carter, Evil Nine, Anto, Mr Pixel, Alex Warren & Paul Darey, you will see what we mean, not names you tend to stumble across on the Vauxhall circuit for instance, so they will definitely offer you something new, fresh & we suspect hard hitting. But fear not gAylisters, as included in the line up is Mr legend himself, our very own Italian stallion Francesco Pagano, who is riding on an amazing wave crest following his debut at Beyond last week & is sure to thrill, as will “Mr lead me astray” (an in house joke) Nick Tcherniak, another terrific talent who will be gracing Matinee’s main floor on Sat (20th), see below, and will definitely treat you to a delectable mixture of his trademark hard tech & electro infused sounds. Then, Matinee London’s promoter of old, Oliver M, will be gracing the decks too, so returning to the big stage for a Spanish supersizer will be a real thrill for him and he is sure to reflect that in a sparkling set, which we hope will include his latest single, Oliver being joined by Blow resident Cagedbaby & Mark Storie from Toolroom records. So, with the music sorted & guaranteed to be top notch, promoter Mark Williams tells us that a “Fucktion One” sound system has been imported to add that extra by of Iberian style to the event, and with customised production, vivacious visuals & superb shows, all direct from Ibiza, this should be one Space On Tour Party to remember. With free giveaways and shots offers at £1.50 & special £2.50 drinks offers all night, it won’t cost an arm & a leg either, with entrance on the door at just £8 before midnight & then £12 thereafter, although you can still grab online tickets at http://clubtickets.com or http://ticketweb.co.uk/. The party kicks off from 10 p.m., running superlate, which in Malice talk means well after the sun has risen on Saturday morning and, as the event is being filmed, we suggest you scrub up for the occasion! More general details can be found at http://spaceibiza.com/ or http://egglondon.net/.

Now, our other Spanish protagonist this weekend is the big one, as Matinee under the steerage of new productions teams Logan Presents, returns to the gAylist capital scene this Sat (20th March) at The Fridge in Brixton, for its “Circuit” event, a special pre-party kicking off a season of tasters for the main event, which takes places in Barcelona in the first week of August. We covered most of the details in our “hot dates” report last week, but news is in that the P.A. for the night will be Luca G, who has graced the performing boards of Matinee before, so is familiar with the stage superlatives in the capital & will add his own elements & dimension to this already amazing outing. To recap on some of the tasty morsels “Circuit” will have on offer, the D.J. line is includes a talent new to Matinee’s decks, but one that will be very familiar to you, as D’Johnny makes his debut and is fresh from a three week vacation in The States, yet was clearly eager to get behind the decks as just hours after landing on Tuesday was gracing Barcode’s D.J. booth and delighting the crowd there with some scintillating sounds. And he is sure to do the same at Matinee on Saturday, serving up some a-typical D’Johnny tunes, electro, funky & tech infused sounds that will get the “Circuit” party off to a great start. Then for his second Spanish outing of the weekend, Nick Tcherniak returns to the Matinee main stage (about time!) and this is one set we are really looking forward to. Nick has delighted us on many occasions with prolific performances, being no stranger to the large scale gAylist events, having been in the thick of the biggest DTPM’s at the Fabric & having played out at SuperMartXe as well, not to mention a string of stunning sets at Trade, so you can bet we will be squeezing our way to the front of the stage for his turn on the D.J. decks. Then, headlining will be Addidas pin-up star turned D.J., Enrico Arghentini, star of Barcelona clubs D-Boy & La Madame, who has held sway at over more than a handful of Matinee parties in the capital and will bring not just his smouldering good looks, but a powerful package of monstrous music to compliment proceedings. Add to all this the massive production, lighting & pyrotechnics displays that you come to expect from Logan presents, together with a stunning array of sexy dancers & go-go’s, providing plenty of eye-candy and this Circuit Festival pre-party is definitely going to give you more than an taster for the main event, as many will flock in from Europe and maybe further a-field (Logan may have some in his Miami suitcase!!). Now, to the boring detail, Matinee “Circuit” at The Fridge in Brixton kicks off at 10.30 p.m. and runs through until 6.30 a.m. Tickets are on sale on the door, but we recommend you pick yours up in person in advance, by going to Soho outlets Prowler, Clone Zone, DV8, The Box or if you are out boozing or schmoozing at Barcode in Soho or Vauxhall. You can also go online to http://clubtickets.com/, all advance tickets costing just £15 (plus booking fees). But entrance is all you will have to pay, as the coatcheck will be free for everyone, as a goodwill gesture & apology for the fiasco at the last party. Plus, we are reliably informed that an additional coatcheck room has been installed by the venue, so hopefully, it should run a lot smoother on Saturday (& forecast is for warm weather). More details of this event can be found at http://loganpresents.com/.

So, what else is on offer to tempt you out this weekend, well, in a more focussed version we pick on just a few that have grabbed us as very much the “best of the rest”. We have to say that Friday seems to be the new Saturday, with Lo-Profile being no exception, this Wardour hangout being a brilliant alternative to the bigger clubs & Friday looks like being the best night, with superstars Brent Nicholls & Jamie Head playing out, Brent on a roll with his “nu-funk” style music (we still want Beyonce though!?) & Mr Head is fresh from three weeks in Oz with some great new sounds to spin. Profile upstairs is not to be missed either, as resident D.J. Phil Marriot will be sporting a pink wig while turning out the tunes, so you better be there to ask why. Alternatively pop into The Box for Matinee’s “Circuit Pre-Party” pre-party (confused, don’t be) with the sexy Mauricio in charge, with plenty of great music on tap too. Down saff & Onyx is the place to be, as new promoter Jonny Marsh is making an impact & with special drinks offers which include 2 for £5 on Vodka + mixer & Carlsberg beer, plus £1 shots, it knocks the spots off the local bars and with discounted entry to boot is the bargain of the weekend. Our other Friday shout goes to Caligula at the Bathhouse in Bishopsgate (that’s the City!), where uber cool & talented D.J./producer/club promoter/ et all, Guy Willams is in charge of the sounds and this is one amazing venue that has to be seen to be believed. Saturday seems to be a Matinee all consuming night, but the best way to warm up for their “Circuit” event is by swinging into Rupert Street where Beyond all-star Alan K will be gracing the decks for the first time (sadly just two Alan!) and will no doubt entertain exceptionally with some scintillating sounds. Talking of which, Beyond itself is bound to be a real hit, as the Matinee crowd converge with others to rock Area to its foundations & Mr K will be there too (with four decks Alan) among other residents that include Hi-Fi Sean who will be celebrating his birthday, so a great reason to be there & buy him a single malt shot to toast his special day. Our other Saturday shout goes to Barcode Vauxhall which should be pumping with Pagano in charge of the main slot in the club space, but also check our special shout for BCS below. Sunday means nothing else but Orange, which is THE best place to round off your weekend & actually send you deep into Monday morning & a sickie from work (why not?!), the RAW room being a real winner for us. Details of all these events can be found in the popular press & if you venues, clubs, events, promoters want a big shout in our new style slot, then send your info through to discomatt@hotmail.com & we will include you from next week.

Now to Barcode and firstly we have to congratulate the team as well as club promoter Patrick Lilley for what, we are told, was an incredible evening last Friday, as the launch of new night “Music Is The Answer” went extremely well, reminding people of the purple patch Queer Nation days. Patrick told us that “It worked a dream we had both rooms rocking which is a first for Fridays - lots of sexy black, white and latino men grooving and a music selection that was a subtle twist on the plot. I was very pleased and we are back on 9th April......it was the perfect place for us to create that type of event as a lot of Queer Nation people already like Barcode". So, hats off to both Barcode Vauxhall (BCV) & Patrick for landing a real gem and we will hopefully be there to review the next one. This Friday sees the team pull a real coup, as they have none other than international megastar D.J. Wayne G, who makes a rare return to the UK and will be playing an exclusive set in the “club” space from 1 a.m. and is joined by birthday boy Hi-Fi Sean. For all you BCV fans, this is unmissable and gets a big thumbs up from us. For details of other D.J’s on duty over the weekend (apart from Pagano of course), check with the venue or at http://bar-code.co.uk/.

Well that’s about all from us for this week, but don’t forget to check out favourite clubbing website http://seenqueen.com/, which has the best gAylisting you will find anywhere & their “Easterliscious” special feature is a MUST read.

As for us, well, as usual, our weekend starts tonight (Thurs 18th) at BCV for Industri (although we may need to protect ourselves from the mgmt with a suit of armour), then Friday we will be doing a much missed roving trip around Soho, encapsulating Rupert Street, The Box for Matinee’s pre-party (the suit of armour will be out again) and then will end it all at Profile & Lo-Profile in the hands of a pink Phil Marriot, Brent Nicholls, Jamie Head & the gorge Philippe. Saturday sees us hit The Fridge (maybe without coat) for Matinee’s “Circuit” party and will no doubt end up in Beyond afterwards (well it has been three weeks!!). So, if you see us out, come say hi and as we always say....Go There! Be There!
