Weekend - 9th to 11th April

Hey Folks,

Well, after a break of just over a week, we are back with our recommendations post, wading through the choices on offer for this weekend, on the back of a hectic Easter, which saw some fabulous events, two of which we will be reviewing, details of these out a little later.

Now, to this weekend and despite the feel that the scene may be taking a breather following the plethora of parties over the extended Bank Holiday just gone, two have caught our eye and we also give space to an “alternative” choice as well as looking at the best of the rest & the sure fire hit of the weekend.

First up is the return of Patrick Lilley’s latest club night to his promoting empire, “Music Is The Answer”, aptly titled “Volume 2” which takes place at Barcode Vauxhall tonight (Fri 9th April) following its highly successful launch last month, the whole style of the club being very akin to Mr Lilley’s uber cool club brand Queer Nation. For those of you unfamiliar with this most popular club night, Queer Nation was a major player in the Saturday clubbing market for many years, cutting an individual yet attractive stride at its home, the trendy venue of the time Substation South, this monthly event serving up a delightful blend of delicious soulful, funky & upbeat music, with a cool as a cucumber crowd that certainly knew how to splendidly socialise & deliriously dance all at the same time. So, with the launch of “Music Is The Answer”, Patrick and his team have in some ways recreated the magic of Queer Nation right in the thick of the Vauxhall Gay village, taking over Barcode across both rooms, delivering a beautiful blend of quality soulful house, deep & sexy beats with plenty of gospel style vocals & thumping baselines, very much in the New York house style with some gorgeous intertwines of vintage disco, that will definitely mean that music will be the answer. And the feedback we got from a whole host of people that attended the launch, was that the night was a resounding success, drew in plenty of Queer Nation faithful along with lots of new faces that craved & enjoyed a Barcode Friday night that had a distinctively individual & fresh feel. Indeed both the promotion team & the venue management remarked that it was one of the most successful Friday’s they had seen for a long time and, Easter tardiness aside, we expect “Volume 2” to be as much if not more popular than the launch. Speaking with Patrick Lilley, he explained of March’s party “...It worked a dream we had both rooms rocking which is a first for Fridays - lots of sexy black, white and latino men grooving and a music selection that was a subtle twist on the plot. I was very pleased......it was the perfect place for us to create that type of event as a lot of Queer Nation people already like Barcode...”. So, with the scene well & truly set, what can you expect from this “Vol 2” outing? Well, as music is central to the theme, New York will meet London in glorious fashion, D.J.’s Pier Need & Supadon (of Queer Nation fame) will spearhead the NYC club space, while up front in the London room, Freddie Dimanche & Mickey Galliano will bring their own special blend of sounds to draw you in. As for entry, well a mere £4 will allow you to party from 10 p.m. when the club night kicks off, right through till 6 a.m., with those armed with either a flyer, special invite or Facebook printout will get in completely gratis before midnight. So, keep your eyes peeled for those Facebook posts & for more general information go to http://bar-code.co.uk/ and let your hosts Patrick Lilley & Clington Forbes treat you to a terrific time.

Our other focus goes to fellow veteran club promoter Suzi Kruger of Fist & Hard On! fame, who decided to fill a gap in the fetish market in Central London with the birth of club night “Sex”, which kicked off at the trendy Sweatbox sauna & gym club on Ramillies Street in Soho last year, offering those into sports kit, football shorts or simply towel wearing, an environment where they could safely indulge in raunchy activity, but with the added pleasure of top notch sounds by some of the scenes sexiest D.J. talents. And that has seen this monthly outing draw a loyal following, a very up for it crowd that have come to adore the combination of horny happenings with sex drenched sounds within a sultry yet seductive space, tickling their fancy for the sporting fetish or simply baring their assets from the simple coverage of a towel, the sauna element of the club night seeing to that. And the night makes a welcome return in its monthly slot of the second Saturday, although the team have changed the name from “Sex” to “Sweat”, nevertheless retaining the characteristics of the former blending elements of both to great effect. And as for those sexy sounds & D.J’s, residents Brent Nicholls & Saki certainly fulfil that criteria, nit just for delivering funky, chunky & horny house, but also serving as some tempting eye candy behind the decks, both entering into the spirit of the night and decking themselves out in suitable sportswear. As for the venue, well Sweatbox is Central London’s best sauna & gym combo’s, offering a modern & swish space to work out then sweat out to your heart’s desire, conveniently located just 2 minutes walk into Soho from Oxford Circus tube & right in the thick of the best action that the West End has to offer and with monthly membership at just a mere £39, is the best value for money gym across gAylist London. So, in running her night “Sweat”, Suzi couldn’t have asked for a better host venue and with the club night kicking off at 9 p.m., it definitely attracts the early birds who are up for some audacious activity, the event running through until 4 a.m. Now fear not, unlike Hard On! this is NOT a membership club night and for all the fun & frolicking, music on tap & all the gym & sauna facilities at your fingertips, the £15 entrance is very good value indeed, but don’t expect to pitch up in regular club wear, as the dresscode is firmly sports kit, football shorts, jocks, speedos or, if you prefer just a towel (ooh er missus!). Further details of the venue & of the club night can be found at http://sweatboxsoho.com/.

Now, we promised at peek at something a little alternative to the norm and the place which seems to be strutting this stride at the moment is The Dalston Superstore in Shoreditch, which has spearheaded and trend to escape out east rather than succumbing to the usual suspects in Soho or Vauxhall. And leading the way in its many specialist nights across any given week, is “Eurotrash”, the brainchild of swanky Swede D.J. & promoter Per Q.X., who together with Alejandro Asencio, bring a whole host our European D.J. talent to play at this trendsetting yet trashy monthly mash up. Having gone all Abba-tastic on us last month in celebration of Per’s birthday, this time the disco goes Dutch, as D.J. Lupe flies in from Amsterdam to join Per & Jeff Laurence behind the decks downstairs, delivering a delicious dish full of electro & ravey indie dance, all helped along by mic vocals from very devious Miss Crystal MC, while Alejandro, accompanied by Jeanette aka boombox & Sloany, spin the trashy tracks upstairs, very much 80’s & 90’sstyle euro pop. Judging by the turnout last month, this is one very in demand event and what’s more is free to get in up till midnight (£3 thereafter), with Eurotrash kicking off at 10 p.m. & running through until 2 a.m. and given the fact this it kicks off a weekend of birthday bashes, as The Dalston Superstore celebrates a year of alternative activity, we couldn’t think of a better way start the festivities. As for the rest of the weekend, well, Saturday is the actual birthday night and in celebration, some of the venues most favourite D.J.’s will be entertaining, including the jovial Joakim, of Tiger Sushi label fame, Horse Meat Disco’s very own Jim Stanton & Ben Pistor from Disco Bloodbath, all three playing in the basement & no doubt creating a veritable storm from behind the decks, while upstairs the infamous Dalston First Ladies Dart Team in the shape of Jonjo, Mikki Most & Ian Robinson will be supplying the sounds to compliment the veritable feast of boozy giveaways &, of course, the mandatory birthday cake (probably cakes!). And with an extra special birthday tinged “Dutty” party on Sunday, serving up 80’s, 90’s & electro beats from Scottee, Double D & Dutty Boi, as well as plenty of birthday party bags handed out, the whole weekend over in Shoreditch in the hands of The Dalston Superstore looks like being a blast & well worth a visit. Now the venue is located at 117 Kingsland Road, the nearest tube being Old Street, but is served by a bucket load of bus routes. This cafe/bar is open 7 days a week for, as they say, “...booze, brunch, burgers, boys, cakes, coffee & plenty of other stuff...”. More info on the venue can be obtained via their Facebook group, by e-mailing simply to hello@dlastonsuperstore.com or by visiting their website.

Right, so what do the best of the rest have to offer? Well, Lo-Profile is yet again a great bet this weekend, with the dynamic duo of Mikey D & Steve Pitron giving the place a distinct Beyond feel to it on Friday, while on Saturday latino lovelies Gonzalo Rivas & Alessandro Londra rip up the dancefloor with their Spanish & Italian intentions. Profile Bar upstairs is a hip happening hang out & with a fabulous food menu, delicious cocktails & a relaxing yet trendy style, is a great way to kick start your night, music on tap from Phil Marriot on Friday & Rob Sykes on Saturday. Other Soho offerings include Village which has their “Discolicious” night on Friday & their “Adamix” outing on Saturday, both serving up classic 70’s, 80’s tunes from Hedi Liscious & more trendy pop from the hunky D.J. Adamix. If you fancy going all bearish, then Barcode entertain another Cave happening on Friday, pint sized powerhouse Steven Artis supplying the sounds, then on Saturday Brent Nicholls looks after proceedings with, we are sure a doze full of his “Nu-Funk” house. The Box is very much the gAylisters choice as the place to been seen & to make the most of the warm weather with alfresco socialising, Friday being particularly popular, while our other Soho selection goes to Rupert Street which remains as popular as ever and has Steven Gellar spinning behind the decks on Saturday. Down in Vauxhall and there is plenty going on as usual, with Friday seeing Onyx return to Area after their biggest party to date, “Resurrection” last week, which stole the show south of the river, resident D.J.’s Phil Marriot, Jamie Hammond, & Jeff Souza the focus of attention in the main room this week but with plenty more besides in the Terrace Bar & Black room’s. But The RVT will be holding its own, with “Kimono Krush” on Friday, “Duckie” on Saturday &, of course their “S.L.A.G.S./Chill-out” splendid Sunday, as will the Eagle, with “Tonker” on Friday, “Carpet Burn” on Saturday and “Horse Meat Disco” on Sunday. Club Union push out their own boat with their afterhours Friday offering ,“Booster”, while the other afterhours party “A.M.” at Fire sees Gonzalo Rivas, D’Johnny & Alan K take the main room by storm, Fire delectations also including “Later” on Sunday afternoon, which is going through something like a purple patch resurgence & is sure to be packed (we can’t wait for Terry Bryan’ set) and no weekend would be complete without “Orange”, which takes you into Monday in manic madness, the ideal sandwich being a breather in Barcode on Sunday night when Paul Heron & Gonzalo Rivas will keep the weekend rolling. Further details of all these parties can be found in the popular press.

Right, well just before we go, we thought we would give our favourite club a big shout (and why not) as Beyond “Afterhours” returns to Area on Sunday morning from 6 a.m. and looks like being the hit of the weekend again, not just serving up scintillating sounds in the main room, this week delivered delightful by the terrific trio of Mikey D, Steve Pitron & Alan K (these boys are unstoppable), but The Terrace Bar gets the Terry Bryan treatment as well as The Sharp Boys & then Jamie Head, who played THE set of the weekend in the same space last Monday afternoon at Orange’s Easter extravaganza (watch for the review). But the pace is hotting up in the “Blackbox” room as well, as it now plays host to the razor sharp sounds that are “Raw”, the legendary offering from Orange, with Hifi Sean taking centre stage to delve into deep & funky tech tunes. Advance tickets of £12 are on sale at the usual Soho outlets, Clone Zone, DV8, & Prowler, at The Box or Fire but also online at http://clubtickets.com/, the club running through to 1 p.m.

O.k. folks, that’s it for another weekend of choices and we hope there is something in there for you, although whatever you decide to do have a great one. As for ours, well it has already started with an impeccable Industri last night in the hands of Minty, Paul Heron & some great new lighting & smoke effects in Barcode Vauxhall. Tonight will see us return to the scene of the crime for “Music Is The Answer” , then have a definitely date at Beyond & Later with our clubbing pal Joel, and if Paul Heron gets his way, we will be at Barcode after that and maybe even Horse Meat Disco & Orange. We are still pondering over Barcode & Sweat on Saturday to complete a full on weekend, but if you see us out, come say hi and as we always say.....Go There! Be There!
