Extra Bites - East Bloc's "Disco Fag Bar" & "Paris Is Burning"

Hey Folks,

Well, looking outside, autumn is definitely with us here in London, which means only one thing, time to head indoors & into a good club night/event and whilst we have given you a number of choices in our Best Bites post (direct link http://discomattweekend.blogspot.com/2010/09/weekend-best-bites-1st-to-3rd-oct), a couple of alternative actions have hit our radar, both worth more than a look in.

First up is new(ish) Friday nighter “Disco Fag Bar”, the brainchild of uber cool club promoter Wayne Shires, who is certainly making waves out east in the hip hop & trendy Shoreditch & Hoxton area, where a hot bed of west end chic meets east end earthiness, this event landing itself slap bang on the gateway to this upcoming part of town, at venue East Bloc on City Road (just shy of Old Street tube station), which opens its doors from Friday through Sunday, attracting a diverse yet up for it crowd into cutting edge new sounds in an industrial style & NYC underground feel of a place that is gaining popularity week on week. And, it comes as no surprise, as resident D.J.’s on rotation include Luke Howard, Jeffrey Hinton, Laurent C & John Sizzle (to name just a few), all playing out a glorious blend of electro disco, synth pop & hi-nrg house that seems to really be making strides in this part of town.

And tonight (Friday 1st Oct) looks like being a corker down at “Disco Fag Bar” as Wayne & his team welcome special guest D.J. Tatu, who flies in direct from Finland especially for the gig, this talent resident at Helsinki’s alternative club “Drag Attack”, probably giving you a clue as to what to expect in terms of, as Wayne puts it perfectly “...a look...”, the music surely matching Tatu’s extravert style and his extended solo set well worth checking out. Add to that, the inclusion of residents John Sizzle, Borja Pena & Laurent C and the music should be up to the high cutting edge standard of this flamboyant club night down Shoreditch way, plus for a hint towards the kind of sounds to expect, why not check out Borja’s latest mix at http://soundcloud.com/borja-32/despertando, with selections of Tatu’s music available at http://soundcloud.com/tatuv. As for “Disco Fag Bar”, well doors open at 10 p.m., with the club night running through till 4 a.m. entrance a mere £5 on the door.

The other event to catch our eye and prove worthy for an extra mention is new night “Paris Is Burning” which takes place tomorrow (Sat 2nd Oct) at, yes you guessed it, East Bloc and is a concept & club night based on the infamous documentary of the same name, evoking those bygone years of New York, when the fashion alternatives sought a spot to strike a pose, express their extravert identity in amongst a wave of disco queens, party boys & girls & men with a mind for admiring catwalk chic & couture with clout. So, central to the night will be a catwalk show, where those daring enough to be both dressed to impress & willing to walk the walk & talk the talk, can show off their skills in front of a panel of judges that vote on the best high fashion male & female, most outrageous & best walk/dance categories, all with the chance of winning the ultimate title of ball bitch!

Brought to you by the Alter Ego Team of James Doyle, Riedwaan Bowers, Coco Creme & co, “Paris Is Burning” also offers a superb soundtrack of vogueing music form some of the hottest D.J.’s on this alternative circuit, including Georgio Oniani & Matteo Manzini, who, together with the walk off, planned for 1 a.m., should add to, as the Alter Ego team aptly put “...a night you will never forget or try to remember...”, this giving you a clue as to the audacious antics & action to expect and for those in the know, this will leave memories of studio 54 out in the cold, well that’s what the team tell us and we can well, believe them. Doors to “Paris Is Burning” at East Bloc, open tomorrow (Sat 2nd Oct) at 10.30 p.m., the club running through until 4.30 p.m. Entrance is a mere £5 for the night and further info can be found by mailing 7thflorrbiiiiteches@gmail.com.

So, it seems East Bloc is definitely beginning to cut a swath across Shoreditch & will definitely be part of our clubbing calendar very soon, as it should be yours.
